There’s a lot more to admire in Astro Bot, even for levels where gamers haven’t played the initial game. A good chunk of gamers who started with the PlayStation 4 probably haven’t played an Ape Escape game before, let alone ever heard of the classic PlayStation franchise. But even so, the charm of Ape Escape is fully conveyed by its tribute level in Astro Bot.

The controller appears to be more or less the same as the original design, except the eyes on the touchpad are Astro’s happy eyes rather than his regular ones. Kudos for finding a way to make me spend $85 on a controller I kind of already have. Punch the bottom bot in a Bot Tower at your Crash Site to knock one out without the whole tower collaping. You can find summon your Rescued Bots to form a Bot Tower at your main Crash Site area, near the column where you find one of the first Crahs Site Puzzle Pieces. Afterwards, the Puzzle Piece is replaced with a Coin Capsule you can summon Bots to reach to break repeatedly. king88 up and punch any of the Bots in the bottom row of the Bot Wall to knock one out!

As Astro, the player embarks on a quest to save lost robots, retrieve parts for the PlayStation 5 mothership, and defeat the alien Space Bully Nebulax. Much like the previous title Astro’s Playroom, Astro Bot uses DualSense controller features including adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. From one level to the next, gamers may go from flipping the very terrain they are walking upon with the changing of the time of day to hopping across a platforming gauntlet set to the beat of a drum. Those are only just two examples in what feels like an endless barrel of level design ingenuity. Astro Bot also did away with some of them from Astro’s Playroom, such as using the center touchpad to unzip some blockades. Instead, this is done with the joystick, suggesting Team Asobi found it best to keep players’ hands off the somewhat clunky touchpad this time around. Each bot you find returns to the (mostly) safe zone, the Crash Site, which acts like a hub world you can explore and decorate. Here, the game carries forward the same PlayStation Museum vibe seen in Astro’s Playroom, albeit to a lesser extent.

Amazing game, would have been great to have had another Christmas level for this year. @Oram77 agree, definitely prefer this kind of level over the speed run levels lol that last level almost broke me. @Kienda Christmas NiGHTS was incredible and the first meaningful example of a game using the real world date and time I can remember. Nah, there are few other very good games on PS5 as well, but not too much, as with every system. I wish they did more actual levels like this rather then the speed run levels while they were enjoyable nothing can beat the free roam ones.

However, some long-time players of platformers produced by Sony will be disappointed in Astro Bot’s current endgame offerings. Besides many of Astro Bot’s creative and exciting boss battles, nostalgia fuels much of Astro Bot’s most thrilling moments, especially with the few stages specifically themed after PlayStation’s most beloved properties. However, those experiences risk feeling hollow for those who haven’t played the games that Astro Bot seems desperate to reference.
